On 26 September 2016, the European Confederation of Local Intermediate Authorities organized the Conference-debate named "Financing investments in tourism industry to increase competitiveness and attractiveness of European territories".
The undertone of the conference was the idea of Tourism as a driving force for regional cooperation across the EU, with the notable participation of Mr Markku Markkula, President of the Committee of the Regions, who specifically mentioned the success of the projects carried out in Dubrovnik. Tourist destinations cannot be considered destinations without a digital infrastructure as well as the high level of services that are available in the near proximity. The local and regional authorities are the ones creating the conditions for a sustainable local tourism development. Promoting the specificities and the added value of their regions in order to attract tourists involve an expertise that is not always a granted skill at local level.
